Interesting read[1].  Also read[2].

In [1] it mentions a C dialect with non-recursive functions combined
with global register allocation.  Apparently MicroChip's Hi-Tech C
compiler uses this technique.

To brutally summarize, PICBIT[2] is mostly about compact data encoding
while PICOBIT[1] focusses on compact byte code representation.
