No restriction on pointers?

Is it possible to not restrict pointers?  If the heap storage is kept
in one piece, GC vectors can be recognized directly by their address.
The point being: it might be too restrictive to require alignment of
all pointers to be able to use tag bits..  This is OK on risc
platforms, but on x86 not all (code) pointers are word-aligned.
