shortcut

I clearly do not have time to dig into this deeply. I get most of
what I need, except for positioning. I.e. I want something like grid
or table layout.

So do some explicit grid layout first, e.g. for thermostat?

EDIT: All looks straightforward: define a grid col/row dims (px,% or
auto), and place elements inside a grid span.

Do I need a lot more than this?

<html>
  <body>
    <div style="display: grid; grid-template-columns: 50% 50%; grid-template-rows: 50px 50px; ">
      <div style="grid-column-start: 1; grid-column-end: 1">
        A
      </div>
      <div style="grid-column-start: 2; grid-column-end: 2; grid-row-start: 2; grid-row-end: 2">
        B
      </div>
    </div>
  </body>
</html>

How to have separate CSS for mobile?
