CPS vs. react-style

Trying to build a web application in Erlang and Javascript, I find it
useful to use CPS for calls initiated by Erlang. Can the same be done
in Javascript? And what would be the difference from a react style
"update the world on reply" approach?

Essentially: should my GUI
  - call into the server and get a reply (xmlrpc)
  - send a single-ended message, and interpret update messages

So how is react different from rest?
In react, actions can flow up. What does that mean?
