Our nonlinear ears
(Not dated. From problems.tex)
Most of the current problems in computer music and musical signal
processing are actually problems in ``Artifical Intelligence''. We, or
some of us at least, are lucky that most sound producing phenomena are
reasonably linear, or at least, have tractable non--linearities. Once
we enter the domain of perceivable qualities, hell breaks loose. There
is scarse information about how things actually work so introspection
and intuition prevail, leading to a patchwork of heuristics and
seemingly original work. Can we do something about it?
Two interesting problems here are pitch detection and source separation.
