refactoring

The thing which gets in the way for proper parsing the code for
refactoring is preprocessor macros. Those are too nasty to do anything
with. Maybe a good way to spend those not-so-awake hours on moving as
much macros as possible to inline functions?

The first one i did: INT in macros.h actually doesn't work because of
the early exit. Maybe i should use a proper exception mechanism? Maybe
the macros are really a symptom?
