`apply'

I suspect apply is way too slow because of the continuation stack
trick.  Changing the evaluation order of arguments from back to front
should make some things easier.. i.e. argument lists can be
constructed in a straightforward manner.  The 'reverse' operation
necessary to construct the list of redexes can be done once at
compilation time.

But, before I'm going to do something like this, some form of
scheme-level profiler is necessary.
