I2C arbitration

How does send/receive arbitration work on I2C?  According to [1],
usually devices take on a single master or slave role, but they can
switch between read and write.

Looking at the PICkit spec PICkit2SourceGuidePCv2-52FWv2-32.pdf from
[2] it seems that I2C uses the ICD AUX(6) pin which is normally LVP.
